March 17th 2015

Hi, it’s Christina –

Good Morning! Happy St. Patrick’s Day & Happy Birthday to my wonderful Mother in law!

So I survived another trek back and forth to Vermont. It’s a six hour drive, that includes several potty breaks, so it’s not too terrible. Believe it or not, I actually enjoy the long drive alone, no conversation, no radio. My family thinks I’m crazy, but they don’t realize I spend that time listening to my characters.

Yesterday I got to meet Beau Chamberlain. He inherited his grandma Maddie’s B&B on the lake in Colson Creek, Georgia. I also met Jeb Culpepper, the town’s deputy, boy that man can talk – talkative Georgia cop, gee I wonder how that character came to be?? LOL. They told me all about this big corporation, Elite Resorts International, who wanted to come in and buy the B&B, and the surrounding land, so they could build a spa retreat.

Then Talia (Taming Tate) elbowed her way in to tell me about a strange incident on the ranch. Olivia was in a snit because her brother still refused to introduce her to the new hunky football player, so she was planning a scheme to get the job done (no title yet); and finally Kieren (Faerie Tale Queen) started pitching a fit because all she’s waiting for is her HEA.

I’m just happy Robert and Blake (Simply by Chance) didn’t jump in on the bandwagon. I’m thinking, with NaNoWriMo only two weeks away, they were all vying for top billing. It was quite funny actually, because at one point they were arguing with each other. Yup, my head can be a scary place. LOL

Okay, I have to go start the corned beef. I’m going to try doing it in the crock pot this year. I’m working today, so that’s the only way I can think to get it done before seven. We’re celebrating Mom’s birthday over at my sister-in-law’s, and I’m in charge of the corned beef and cabbage. This year I’m also making the birthday cake, strawberry short cake, so I need to get that baked as well before I have to leave. Translation – I need to get my butt in gear.

I hope you have a marvelous day, and happy writing!

February 10th, 2015 Challenge

Hi, it’s Christina –

First, Happy 22nd Birthday to my son’s girlfriend Alex and to my Uncle Phil. Hope you have a wonderful day.

Well, I survived another party at my house. We had twenty-nine people total, and other than a logistical parking nightmare, all went well. Thanks to my generous neighbors, Umang & Kunal, we managed – they housed all the overflow cars. Without them, we would have had a real issue.

At one point, my nephew and his girlfriend pulled in the driveway, and I kicked them out, telling them to go home and come with their mom. Normally parking at our house isn’t an issue, folks just park all over the lawn, but with the recent snowfall, that became out of the question. Now some of you would be horrified by this, but it’s not like my lawn is sod. Heck, if it weren’t for the crabgrass, there’d be very little green at all.

The Chinese food was a big hit, and clean-up was a breeze, because there were virtually no leftovers. I had a rip roaring time with my great niece, Isabelle. She kept calling me a monster and running away screaming, then she’d attack me with Dani’s bouquet of balloons. (In all fairness, I am “the tickle monster”.)

Four out of the eight people in our family whose birthdays fall between February 2nd & February 15th we in attendance, and we sang to all of them. From Left to Right are Aunt Mary (my father’s sister) 2/2, Dani Rose 2/4, Uncle Phil (my mother’s BiL) 2/10, & “Uncle” Lenny (Bec’s hubby) 2/2. The folks who were missing were Charlotte (cousin) 2/7, Alex (PJ’s gf) 2/10, Lys 2/15 & Christopher (nephew) 2/15. Up to a few years ago there was another birthday in that laundry list as well. Happy 92nd birthday in Heaven Gram (2/13). We really know how to clump them together, don’t we?

Yesterday I was not good company to be around. I contacted Kobo to find out where I stood with the formatting issues with my books, only to find out they still have not been able to figure it out, and the made A Second Chance and Taking Chances LIVE on their site. I pitched a royal fit because the books were not ready to go live and some sweet person in Australia purchased one already.
I did a shout out on Facebook and Twitter yesterday in hopes of finding the person and asking them to contact me. When/If they contact me, I want to get their address so I can mail them a signed hard copy of the book. It makes me physically ill to think they purchased something which was sub-par, with my name on it.

I’m NOT a happy camper. So basically, instead of getting a $2 royalty payment from Kobo for selling my book, it is going to cost me roughly $20 to make this right (the cost of the book itself plus the cost of postage to Australia). I am MORE than willing to do this for my reader, it just fries my cookies that Kobo screwed up so badly. I have NO idea what is going on over there, and until they can assure me they have fixed the issue, I have put all my books on the “de-list” list. Argh!

Annie, my publisher, said something to me last night which made me wonder. She has zero, and I mean ZERO, problems loading books onto Kobo. Annie is working off of an older computer. I have Windows8 plus whatever they recently did with the last round of upgrades. I’m wondering if this is a compatibility issue and Kobo’s system can’t handle the newest software. If so, then I may have inadvertently unearthed a whole can of worms. I just hope they get it fixed and soon.

I have another dilemma. I’ve told you that, for reasons unknown, I have been waking up at 3:38 every morning for over two weeks now. On Friday night, I took a little blue pill – NO, NOT THAT LITTLE BLUE PILL – and it knocked me out until seven Saturday morning. For the first time in forever, I got a solid eight hours of sleep. However, when I woke up, I couldn’t move. I guess I slept the entire eight hours in one position, and when I woke, my back was in such spasms I couldn’t even take a full breath.

So here are my choices – get sleep, wake up in agonizing pain, and take a few hours to be even able to function, OR walk around in a sleepy dopey fog from lack of sleep every day. Experts say you really can’t “catch-up” on sleep, so taking the pill once a week won’t solve anything. Maybe my hubby was right, and I should just play 338 in the Pick 3, and then I’ll stop waking up at that time every day. For a buck, it may just be worth a try.

Okay, I have to boogie. I hope you have a great day, and happy writing!

Use the following: Big, Orange, Platypus (you can blame Dani for this one)

February 5th, 2015 Challenge

Hi, it’s Christina –

Oh JOY, more white stuff falling from the sky. This is getting old, FAST. If I was staying in, this wouldn’t be an issue; but because of RV’s commitments today, I will be crisscrossing Central Jersey for most of the day. I detest driving in bad weather.

So Dani won her request to have the Christmas tree up until her birthday, but tomorrow, it’s coming down. I’m sick of looking at the thing.

Her birthday was good. She’s so excited about the Nikon D3200 camera Paulie and I got her. The gift was a bit extravagant, but a girl only turns 16 once, and it was the only thing she really wanted. We’ll be eating a lot of pasta over the next few weeks. LOL

Although she LOVED her gift from PJ and Alex, she wasn’t a happy camper this morning. The mid-way piercing is rather painful, and the poor kid didn’t get much sleep last night. Unfortunately, there isn’t a dang thing we can do to help her. She’s just going to have to wait it out.

As you know, I have been focusing on Twitter for marketing this past week, and quite frankly, it still is making my head spin. I’ve been doing 3 – 4 posts per book (depending on spacing) a day, manually thanking each new follower, and manually thanking each person who retweets one of my tweets. I have also been retweeting, favoriting, and commenting on other tweets. They come in so fast and furious though, I doubt I’m seeing 10% of the tweets that come in. I sneezed, got up to get a tissue, blew my nose, tossed the tissue, and when I came back, there were 218 new tweets – in what 45 seconds. Good grief!

I got a reply from Kobo yesterday. Their advice was to delete my books. REALLY? Needless to say, I pitched a fit. I don’t mind putting in the hours, but then for those hours to be for naught, fries my cookies. Basically, I told them to “figure it out”. You would think if the IT team was worth a grain of salt, this wouldn’t be such an issue. They’ve been “working on it” for over a week now. WTHeck?

My publisher, Annie Acorn, was so sweet. She told me I could send the books to her, and she would see if she could get them to work on Kobo. She isn’t even the publisher on these books, and she wasn’t asking for anything in return for getting them up on the site for me. Bless her heart! I told her we’ll wait and see what the Kobo Team comes up with, but it’s looking more and more like I may have to take her up on her offer.

With all the money grubbing scoundrels out there in the publishing world, I have been blessed with a real gem. I am so grateful our paths crossed, and I am so looking forward to a long future with Annie. She is truly priceless, always ready to share her vast knowledge, makes an excellent sounding board – not just on books, but on life as well, and is just an all-around good soul. Yes, I have been truly blessed.

Oh, by the way, I forgot to tell you this last week. Annie has asked me to be a guest Quill for the Pen & Ink blog on her site. As soon as I know more, I’ll let you know and provide you with a link. In the meantime, if you’d like, here’s the link to previous Pen & Inks. If you have any desire to write, you should check it out. The advice and tips are wonderful.

Okay, I have to get an early start today, so I best be going. I hope you have a warm & safe day, and happy writing!

November 29th Challenge

OH BOTHER! I'm not quite sure what I did, but I never posted this. So here's the 11/29/14 post. I'll give it a little while before I post the one I have for today.

Hi, it’s Christina –

My sister-in-law Cindy
with the cake Lys made
Good Morning! So has everyone recovered from their food comas yet? I haven’t because our feast was a two day event, and today isn’t going to be much better.
Obviously on Thursday we pigged out on the traditional Thanksgiving fare – turkey, mashed & sweet potatoes, stuffing, corn, cheesy vegetables, creamed onions, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, rolls, cranberry bread, and apple, cherry, pear raspberry & pumpkin pies. Yesterday we celebrated my sister-in-law’s birthday (a little late, but she wanted Lys to be home for the celebration), and my mother-in-law cooked. We had ham, more mashed potatoes and corn and sweet potatoes, broccoli, red cabbage, carrots, and birthday cake (which Lys made).

My High School Senior
Picture.
Tonight I have my thirty year high school reunion, so we are going to be stuffing ourselves yet again. It’s so hard to believe a little over a year ago we were starting to plan the event, then there was a huge push these past five months, and now the day is finally here. Thanks to advances in the internet, we were able to locate more classmates this time around than ever before. Unfortunately many will not be able to make it, but we will have around a hundred people, so it will be a fun night.

One good thing is, the folks who cannot make it are now connected through a Facebook page we have dedicated to our class. For the past few weeks the page has been exploding with posts of old photos, and comments. It has been amazing. Hopefully, even though the reunion will be over tonight, folks will keep posting photos and stories between now and the next reunion. I’m also hoping we can persuade the classmates who are not on Facebook to join, just so we don’t have to lose our minds next time around trying to track them down again.

Carol, her husband, and her 5 kids.
Aren't they a beautiful family?
One of my friends, Carol, just started a thread, on our class page, where we are to post where we are now, what we are doing, and a recent family photo. The replies are starting to come in, and it’s nice to get the updates. I will admit, I am a little jealous of Carol. She has five kids, including a set of thirteen year old twins, and she looks more beautiful now than she did in high school.

I wish she was able to come to the reunion, but travel on Thanksgiving weekend is so cost prohibitive, I think that is what kept many of our classmates from being able to attend. This was the first time we held the reunion on Thanksgiving weekend. I think our mindset was classmates would be visiting their families anyway for the holiday, so they would be in town. It turns out that many of the families have also moved away in the past thirty years, so it kind of back fired on us. I’m pretty sure, next time, we are going to shoot for late September – early October to have the reunion.

Okie-Dokie, I am off to Kohl’s to return a sweater for Lys. She bought it when she was home for fall break, wore it once, washed it, and it fell apart. I’m hoping Kohl’s doesn’t give me a hard time about it. All I want to do is exchange it for the exact same sweater.

BTW – I probably won’t be posting again for a few days. I’m fairly certain I will be driving Lys and her friend Max back to NC tomorrow. It’s a twelve hour drive between my house and Lys’ college. The kid she drove home with made it in just under nine hours. He was driving between 95 and 100 mph most of the way. YEAH, I am NOT letting my daughter get back in the car with him.

The ride home Monday should be interesting. I am scheduled to do a radio interview with Ron Shaw on ArtistsFirst Radio Network at 8:00 pm on Monday, and interview I will be doing via Blue Tooth in my car. It should be interesting. Please tune in.

Okay, I really have to run now. I hope you have a great day, and happy writing!

July 14th Challenge

Hi it’s Christina –

Good Morning! First I want to say Happy Birthday to my Aunt Linda. Hope you have a great day!

It may take three cups of coffee again today, but I MUST WRITE! I barely hit 1,300 words yesterday before I had to go and pick up the girls. My hubby will be out the door in a few minutes, and then I should have three to four hours of uninterrupted peace and quiet. (Dani’s a sleeper.)

I think I’m having a hard time because I really have no clue where the story is going. Only a few stepping stones have been revealed to me between where I’m at and the HEA, and I’m not sure what the road is going to look like between points A, B, C and D. This happens every time, so I should be used to it, and just suck it up, forge ahead, and trust my characters to lead me where they want to go.

So supposedly Champlain has confirmed they received, filled out, and mailed all the appropriate paperwork off the High Point, so now we are just waiting for High Point to process their end and get the acceptance package off to us.

I’m seriously starting to stress. She leaves for school in six weeks and I know nothing. I don’t know what kind of grants or scholarships she is going to be offered. How much is this going to cost us? I don’t know which dorm she’ll be assigned, which means do I need full size bedding or twin size bedding? Does she need a fridge? What’s allowed in the dorm – coffee pot, microwave, etc.? Who’s her roommate? When can she choose her classes so we can get her books ordered?

I went through all of this last year, just like every other parent of a college freshman. I should not have to be subjected to it a second time, and because of Champlain dragging their feet, it’s actually worse this time. High Point is going to be looking for money, and the loans aren’t even finalized yet because we weren’t sure which school Lys was going to. It’s all such a cluster, and there isn’t a dang thing I can do about it at the moment.

Since there is nothing I can do about it, and stressing will not change the situation one iota, I am off to Ireland where I do have control.

I hope you have an amazing day, and happy writing!

Your Last Challenge was:

You are speaking to a cashier, when you hear shouting behind you.

It was a typical Saturday morning. I was out running errands. I had stopped at the bank, the post office, at Starbucks to indulge in a mocha cookie crumble frappe, and my last stop, before tackling the grocery store was the dry cleaners. As usual, the place was hopping. There were two people in line ahead of me, as well as three others in line at the second register, but I did not mind. I was sipping on an entire day’s worth of calories, and I was quite content.

The two people in front of me picked up their orders, and it was finally my turn. Since this was an establishment I frequented regularly, I knew most of the employees. Mia, the owner’s daughter, was at the register. While she was ringing me up, and I was asking her about school and about her new boyfriend, a commotion suddenly erupted behind me.
I was shocked at how many photos
of cars who drove through dry
cleaner's front windows I had to
choose from on the internet. Who
knew being a dry cleaner was such a
dangerous job?
The tone of the patron’s voice had me instinctually jump out of the way, and I’m grateful I did. If I had taken the time to look and see what they were yelling about, more than likely, I would not be here today to tell you this harrowing tale.

It all happened in the blink of an eye. One second I was chatting with Mia, and the next, an SUV was parked in the very spot I had been standing. The car missed me by inches.

TOTAL FICTION, well at least as far as my involvement in the accident. A few days ago, I saw an episode of Caught On Camera, where this same scene played out. The girl behind the counter, remarkably, received only minor injuries, a few broken bones if I recall correctly. The elderly gentleman driving the car mistakenly hit the gas instead of the brake. He was shaken, but was relatively unharmed.

July 13th ChallengeDa

Hi it’s Christina –

Good Morning! First I want to say Happy Birthday to my brother-in-law, Frank. Hope you have a great day!

I have the ideal day to write. The girls spent the night at their Aunt’s house, my hubby is sound asleep, I woke up early, but I can’t seem to get the lead out. I’ve been up for over four hours, and these are the first words I’m writing, and even they are a struggle.

I’m just so tired. Hopefully this second cup of coffee will kick in, and I will be able to take advantage of this quiet morning. Yesterday I was in the mood to write, but my household wouldn’t allow it, and it frustrated me to no end. Today I have no excuse.

With any luck, my phone will charge enough for me to get the pictures from yesterday off of it. The cake Lys made was beautiful, and quite yummy, and I wanted to show you the pictures. Plus I got some great shots of “the cousins”. The girls had so much fun together. The get along really well, and it is such a shame they aren’t able to get together more often.

Kara did fine traversing the bridges. I knew she would. It boosted her self-confidence knowing she could tackle something she had always feared. She only had half of her brood with her yesterday, just her three oldest, so she was able to kick back relax and enjoy her day, not having to stress over chasing around the little ones.

New York was well represented yesterday, even though we were missing more than half of the crew. Cathy and her son Mark were there, but Frankie and Kristen had to go to a graduation party, and I’m not quite sure where Samantha was. Joe and Maria came and they brought their chocolate lab Blaze. Man, what a smart dog he is. Even though Michael and Kaitlyn (and baby Frankie) couldn’t come, Steve and Gina were there. The only branch of the family not represented was Billy and his brood. So we had ten out of
Dani, Gia, Lys, Lex, Grace
Holly & Angie
twenty four.

I realize you don’t know who all these people are, or how the relationships fit, but because I’m sure you will be hearing about them all from me in the future, I thought I would give you a little background. Cathy and Maria are twins and their brother is Billy. The three of them are my mother-in-law’s second cousins. Maria is married to Joe, and Cathy was married to Peter. Peter and Joe are brothers, but not twins. Maria and Joe are the parents of Kara, Michael and Steve. Cathy is the mom of Frankie, Mark and Samantha (Mark and Samantha are twins). Billy, who was married to Patti, have Bridget, Richie, Willie and Eric. Kara is married to Jamie, and their kids are Alexa, Gia, Angie, Samantha, Nicholas and Antonio. Michael is married to Kaitlyn and they have a daughter Francesca (aka: Frankie). Steve is married to Gina, and Frankie is married to Kristin.

It’s enough to make your head spin isn’t it? This is only one example of a small portion of our family. If I ever got into my collection of cousins, your heads would really spin.

Can you see where I get my inspiration for the intricately woven family dynamic for my Bradford series? In Taking Chances you got to meet Samantha and her brothers. Future stories will feature her brothers and love interests of their own. Those love interests will have families of their own as well to bring into the mix – and so on, and so on. Who knows, perhaps someone from one family will hook up with someone from another family. Only time will tell.

Alright, it is now almost eleven o’clock and I haven’t even started on Faerie Tale Queen. This morning may require a third cup of coffee…

I hope you have an incredible day, and happy writing!

Your Last Challenge was:

In for a penny, in for a pound

There are some times in life where half measures will not cut it. You need to say “in for a penny, in for a pound”; and go for it, knowing full well you will either rise in a blaze of glory or crash into a spectacular explosion. There is no sticking one toe in first to test the water, sometimes you “just gotta jump on in”.

Good grief! I got nothing! I thought it would be an easy prompt. Hopefully I’ll have better luck with FTQ.

July 7th Challenge

Hi it’s Christina –

Holly (whose birthday was 6/30 and I
forgot to mention it - I'm such a bad
Aunt) & Gracie
Good Morning! First off, I want to wish my niece Gracie a Happy 14th Birthday!

Daughter #1 is off to work, Hubby leaving shortly & Daughter #2 is headed to the beach with a friend in two hours. I’m going to have the entire house to myself! Yeah, several uninterrupted hours to write!

I need to get 2,500 words down today to make up for the light writing weekend. I have no worries about finishing Camp NaNo, but I am beginning to question if I will finish (without edits) FTQ before the July 31st deadline for the publisher in NYC. I am also beginning to wonder if this is a Freudian response.

Perhaps subconsciously I don’t want to go with the publisher, so if I can’t meet the deadline, it won’t even be an option. Ah, but now it is exposed, and I cannot hide behind it, so my fingers will now fly and the words will now flow freely – wishful thinking??

The story has taken a little bit of a strange twist, which surprised me. I am a bit anxious to see where it is going to go. The villain is not quite defined yet, so I’m a little foggy on its (it is an “it” not a “who”… I think) capabilities and methods.

"Sebastian", "Sea Bass", "Bashy" ,
"Bashy - Boo", "Boodles" - this cat
 answers to everything.
Would you like to meet one of the characters from Faerie Tale Queen? This is Sebastian. Isn’t he a cutie? He’s going to be eight in October, and his name is really Sebastian. It was so fitting, so why change it? I don’t think he minds.

Okay, I have a little over an hour of quiet before Dani gets up, so I’m off to slay some dragons, well at least try to figure out how to keep a swirling black mist at bay. I hope you have a marvelous day, and happy writing!

Your Last Challenge was:

“Putting pen to paper lights more fire than matches ever will” (Malcolm Forbes)

A play on the classic “the pen is mightier than the sword” for sure, but equally as profound. Words are power, and fire can come in many forms.

Words can be inspirational, as in Randy Pausch’s book “The Last Lecture”, and make you realize your time on this earth is fleeting, and you should squeeze every last drop of life out of the time you have. They can transport you to another world, and have you fight with the little guy against a great evil, as in JK Rowling’s or JRR Tolkein’s series. The written word can also be propaganda, and light a misguided fire, as in Hitler’s “Mein Kampf”, or Rev. Jim Jones’ People’s Temple brochures.

Yes, pen and paper are the mightiest weapons we possess. The question is, will you use them for good or evil?

April 1st Challenge

Hi, it’s Christina –

GOOD MORNING! Believe it or not, I have been up for hours already, and I’m just getting to my blog. Since Camp NaNo started today, I decided to dive right in and get the ball rolling. I was kinda bummed to find my friend Dorothy May was not assigned to my cabin…again, but we’ll still keep each other going through this crazy month ahead.

I did finish my editing project at around eight last night, and forwarded the edited manuscript back to its author. The story was good, had quite a few laugh out loud moments, and when he gets done editing, he’ll have a really good story. He had a few questions, so I shot him a LONG email this morning. I love having the opportunity to help new authors, but I think Joe might be the last one I can help as far as pro bono edits. L I just don’t have the time, and I refuse to give a sub-par edit. I’ll continue to do them for my small circle of friends, but I will no longer choose an Indie author at random and offer my services.

Writing today is going to be difficult, but I’m NOT complaining. I have to keep stopping to answer phone texts and FB messages. All the birthday messages have really made my day, and it’s not even eight in the morning yet! I am truly blessed!!

Okay, I’m going to run so I can try to get another chapter completed before I have to leave for work. Ooo, that sounds weird, but I’m looking forward to it.

I hope y’all have an amazing day, and happy writing!

Your Last Challenge was:

Help, I’m shrinking…

In retrospect, I guess it all started about a week ago when I noticed my wedding ring was getting loose. I didn’t pay it much mind though, I just figured I was finally losing a little weight, so I wasn’t going to complain. The next thing I noticed was I couldn’t reach something on the top shelf in my cabinet, and considering I had just put the item on the shelf a few days prior, not being able to reach it again, had me a little baffled. Then, the other night, I had to cheek up into the chair at the dinner table. Okay, I know I have bar height chairs, but come on, my kids don’t even have to stretch to get into them.

Something weird was going on, and I mentioned it to my husband, but he thought I was nuts. Well, this morning, when I woke up, I swung my feet over the side of the bed…and they didn’t reach the floor! I fumbled for the light and flipped it on, just to make sure I was fully awake and not dreaming. I looked down at my feet, and there they were, dangling about two inches off the floor.

Well my five a.m. shriek woke my husband. He got up to see what had me so upset, and did a double take when he saw my feet. He doesn’t think I’m nuts anymore.
